A Guide to the Coatings You Can Use to Protect Your Concrete Floor

Concrete floors can easily become damaged through wear or corrosion. The simplest way to protect them is by using a concrete floor coating. There are four main types of coating that are used.

Epoxy

Epoxy coatings are a mixture of epoxy resin and a chemical hardener. As the mixture dries, the two chemicals combine to form a hard layer that binds thoroughly to the floor. This produces a very tough surface that doesn't damage easily and is long-lasting. It is also highly resistant to chemical spills. This makes it ideal for use in industrial situations such as factories or warehouses. However, the surface must be fully repaired and completely cleaned before application, which can be time-consuming and difficult.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane coatings look very similar to epoxy surfaces, but they have the advantage of being softer. This makes them more comfortable to walk on so that they are suitable for surfaces that have a lot of foot traffic. They also set much faster than epoxy surfaces, and their elasticity means that they absorb shocks better and are less likely to scratch. However, they can start to bubble in damp areas as they are not resistant to moisture, and they do not have a very long lifetime.

Polyaspartic

Polyaspartic has several advantages over epoxy and polyurethane. For one thing, it can be used in a single coat, whereas other types will probably need a base coating and a topcoat. It is therefore a very fast solution and can be installed in a few hours. Again, though, it can be awkward to prepare the surface. Polyaspartic coatings can also give off solvent fumes when they are being applied so that experienced professionals with the correct equipment will be needed.

Acrylic

Finally, acrylic coatings are popular as they are relatively inexpensive. However, they are not as strong and durable as other types of surfaces and will need to be re-applied more often. This can make them more expensive in the long run. However, they can be the right solution for a concrete floor that doesn't get a lot of use, or which are largely decorative. Surfaces that are used by vehicles or which get a lot of foot traffic are probably not suitable for this treatment.

It is important to use the right coating for your concrete floor, as it will protect the floor from damage and wear and will vastly increase its lifetime. Just talk to any supplier to find out more about the various coatings.
